Highway 49 traffic stop leads to shootout, standoff that kills one in Richland

A routine traffic stop in Richland led to the shooting death of one and the injury of a police officer in a standoff situation late Thursday night into early Friday morning.

Richland Police officials say that the sequence of events began Thursday night on Highway 49 when officers conducted a traffic stop on an RV. During the stop, a person in the vehicle opened fire at officers. Officers exchanged fire, and the subject barricaded themselves inside the RV.

Authorities say a standoff situation ensued, ending shortly after 6 a.m. Friday. One person was reported dead after the incident, while one officer was transported to a local hospital to be treated for injuries sustained “in a traffic accident.”

The subject involved in the altercation has been identified as 77-year-old Abdullah Chetin.

Multiple other agencies assisted during the standoff and subsequent investigation.
