A new study shows the most stressed cities in America, two of which are right here in Mississippi.

Gulfport and Jackson are places where residents feel the most stress, whether that be due to the status of their checkbooks or concerns over safety when bouncing around town. WalletHub found that Gulfport is the fourth-most stressed U.S. city while the capital of Jackson was scored as the tenth-most stressed.

To determine the cities where residents feel the most stress, WalletHub used 39 key metrics to consider strain in the areas of work, finance, family, health, and public safety.

Chip Lupo, one of the company’s analysts, said that while not all stress is preventable or even bad, certain kinds of stress can have damaging effects on both mental and physical health.

“Some stress is out of our control, due to issues with family, friends, or employers. However, where you live can play a big role in how stressed you are,” Lupo said. “Cities with high crime rates, weak economies, less effective public health, and congested transportation systems naturally lead to elevated stress levels for residents.”

As for the rest of the list showing stress among residents, the Motor City of Detroit parked in the top spot. Cleveland, Ohio, came in at No. 2. Baltimore landed at No. 3, and Memphis rounded out the top five.

The five least-stressed cities of the more than 180 analyzed are South Burlington, Vt.; Fremont, Calif.; Sioux Falls, S.D.; Irvine, Calif.; and Burlington, Vt.
