Officials are investigating after a body was found hanging from a tree on the campus of Delta State University.
The body was found by a staffer around 7:05 a.m. Monday near central campus, according to Delta State police chief Michael Peeler. Peeler and Delta State President Dr. Daniel Ennis announced during an afternoon press conference that the deceased has been identified as Demartravion “Trey” Reed, a student at the university.
Reed, who was 21 years old, graduated from Grenada High School in 2023.
“Our community is deeply saddened by this loss and we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends and all of those affected by Trey’s loss. I have spoken to Trey’s family and expressed our heartbreak,” Ennis said.
Authorities added that no foul play is suspected at this time. However, the investigation into the matter will remain open with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, Bolivar County Sheriff’s Department, and the Cleveland Police Department aiding the Delta State Police Department in the case.
“This is a safe campus. Delta State University is a beautiful place to be. It’s just unfortunate that this loss comes heavy to our campus,” Peeler said.
School officials notified students Monday morning that counselors and support services are available to students, faculty, and staff through the O.W. Reilly Counseling Center. All classes and major events scheduled at the university have been canceled for the day with Tuesday’s schedule yet to be announced.
