State championship-winning high school football coach Lance Pogue is out as the frontman at Brandon before the end of his first season with the Bulldogs.

Pogue, who was in his first year as the Bulldogs’ head coach and athletics director, resigned from his post this week. No specific reason was given as to why Pogue stepped down. His resignation comes as Brandon boasts a 3-4 record and is 1-1 in district play. Brandon was the runner-up in last year’s 7A state championship game, falling to Tupelo 28-16.

Pogue, who is best known for leading South Panola to a national championship in 2010, was announced as Brandon’s head coach in March after former frontman Sam Williams stepped down to coach UMS-Wright, a prep school in Alabama.

Defensive backs coach Eugene Clinton will take over as interim head coach until a permanent replacement is found. The Bulldogs play next against Oak Grove in Hattiesburg on Friday at 7 p.m.
