Agriculture Commissioner Andy Gipson is encouraging Mississippians to celebrate the season with a locally grown Christmas tree, emphasizing the economic and environmental benefits of supporting the state’s farmers.
“This year, I’m encouraging families to celebrate the season in true ‘Genuine Mississippi’ fashion by choosing a tree grown right here at home,” Gipson said. “Our team at the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce has made it simple to find a fresh, real Christmas tree. Just head to MSChristmasTrees.com to browse a full list of farms across the state and learn about the types of trees grown in Mississippi, as well as helpful tips for keeping your tree healthy throughout the holidays.”
Nearly 30 Christmas tree farms operate across Mississippi, producing thousands of trees each year, including varieties such as the Leyland cypress and Eastern redcedar. State officials note that real trees are biodegradable and environmentally friendly, and that buying local keeps dollars circulating through Mississippi communities.
“Many of these local Christmas tree farms offer family-friendly experiences for you and your loved ones beyond selecting a tree. Visitors can enjoy hot chocolate stations, Christmas lights and attractions, wagon rides, family photo-opportunities, and more to make this holiday season special,” Gipson continued. “So, I invite everyone to visit a Christmas tree farm near them, bring the family, and start a tradition you’ll look forward to year after year.”
Most farms open their season on Thanksgiving Day or the following weekend. Some also allow families to pre-tag a tree to reserve it for pickup later in the season.
