A detention officer had a portion of her face bitten off when being attacked by an inmate, according to the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office.
The RCSO announced Tuesday afternoon that on Monday around 8 p.m., Sergeant Stephanie Dodd experienced a “dangerous, even life-threatening” situation when she responded to a disturbance at the cell of an inmate inside the Rankin County Adult Detention Center.
Monica Gandy, who was previously indicted on retaliation against a public servant and attempted grand larceny, refused all of Dodd’s verbal commands and when Dodd opened the cell door, Gandy got violent, according to a release from the RCSO.
“The inmate refused all verbal commands and when Sgt. Dodd opened the cell door, the inmate immediately began punching the detention officer. After the two fell to the ground and as the incident was ongoing, the inmate bit off a portion of Sgt. Dodd’s eyelid/eyebrow,” the release recounted.
The two were eventually separated and Dodd was treated at a local hospital. She received multiple stitches to close the bite wound. Gandy, on the other hand, was charged with assault on a county jail officer – adding to her current rap sheet.
