A state of emergency has been declared in Yazoo City due to a shortage of police officers.

The Yazoo Herald reported that the declaration was accepted by the Board of Mayor and Alderman during the November board meeting. The measure noted that the city is operating under “conditions of extreme peril” as patrol staffing has diminished.

As the Yazoo City Police Department works to address the shortage, the Yazoo County Sheriff’s Office is stepping in to bear some of the load.

“As your sheriff, along with my entire staff, I am committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents,” Sheriff Jeremy “Bull” McCoy stated. “We recognize that crime is at an all-time high, and we want you to know that we will be present and proactive as often as possible to provide the best law enforcement services we can – whether you reside within the city limits or in the county.”

McCoy added that residents need to report any tips or information related to criminal activity immediately to aid his office in curbing crime.

“Your cooperation is vital in helping us keep our community safe,” he continued. “This is not a time for fear, but a time to come together. By working as one, we can ensure that safety remains our top priority for Yazoo City and the surrounding communities.”
