Blood shelves are thinning in Mississippi this holiday season, making donations paramount in order to have enough product for potentially life-saving purposes.

Mississippi Blood Services is sounding the alarm that its supply of all blood types, except for AB+ and AB-, is in a state of critical need during the winter months. Fittingly for the season of giving, officials are asking eligible members of the public to take some time out of their schedule and be the difference in their community by giving blood.

“The holidays often mean fewer donations, but the need for blood never takes a break. Help save lives this season and give the ultimate gift: the gift of life,” an official statement from Mississippi Blood Services reads.

All blood types are being accepted at this time, but universal donors are especially being sought out. Those 16 years of age or older, who weigh at least 110 pounds, and are in good health are eligible to donate, though some restrictions may apply.

Mississippi Blood Services has three brick-and-mortar locations: Flowood, Cleveland, and Oxford, while its mobile unit travels across the Magnolia State for blood drives. When one donates, the organization distributes the blood to hospitals in Mississippi and neighboring states for surgeries, trauma, cancer treatment, and blood disorders.

While walk-ins are welcome, folks can call (601) 368-2673 to schedule an appointment. More information on who can donate blood can be found here.
