The holiday season is here, and a record number of Americans are projected to travel at least 50 miles from home to visit loved ones and enjoy festivities. With that in mind, the Mississippi Department of Transportation will be halting some highway construction from Christmas Eve until New Year’s Day.
In addition to the delay in roadwork, Mississippians will not have to worry about pesky non-emergency lane closures while hitting the road to see family, friends, and other loved ones.
“Even though highway construction across the state will be suspended, motorists should be aware that some lane closures will remain in place,” MDOT Executive Director Brad White said. “These lane closures are to protect the traveling public, and MDOT wants motorists to treat these like active work zones, even with the absence of workers. Please slow down in these work zones.”
For those planning to drive on Mississippi’s many highways this holiday season, MDOT has the following list of tips to maximize safety:
- Plan and allow for extra travel time
- The MDOT Traffic mobile app shows real-time traffic conditions along your travel route
- Slow down and use extra caution in work zones
- Don’t litter those new presents
- Secure your load properly to your vehicle
- Buckle up
- Using your seatbelt is an easy and effective way to save lives and reduce serious injuries in the event of a crash.
- Do NOT drive impaired
- If you plan to drink, have a designated driver
- Avoid distractions like cell phones and food
- Watch for deer and other wildlife
- When temperatures drop, animals are more active near highways.
- Use extra caution if traveling during dawn, dusk, and after dark
“With increased traffic around Christmas and New Year’s, driving smart is crucial in ensuring a safe and enjoyable holiday for all Mississippians,” White added. “Do your part by obeying the speed limit, buckling up, and not driving distracted or impaired. We want everyone to get home for the holidays safely.”
