17 dogs were discovered in severe neglect inside a Jackson home during an investigation into the disappearance of 81-year-old Carol Ryan, a missing-person case that has since turned into a death investigation.

Jackson police were conducting a search at Ryan’s home on Baybury Lane on Dec. 22 when human remains were located buried on the property, prompting investigators to shift the case from a missing person investigation. Ryan’s son and daughter-in-law, John and Samantha Ryan, have been arrested in connection with the discovery.

During the search, officers also found 17 Yorkshire terriers and Yorkie mixes living inside the residence. A development that wasn’t announced until Thursday. The dogs were removed from the home and placed in the care of the Mississippi Animal Rescue League (MARL).

MARL officials said the dogs appeared to be neglected, with matted fur, overgrown nails, and signs of prolonged neglect. The animals are now undergoing medical evaluations, grooming, and treatment at the shelter in Jackson.

“All 17 were transferred to MARL so they could begin receiving the care they so desperately need. What we saw when they arrived was heartbreaking. Almost every single dog is matted,” MARL wrote in a Facebook post. “Several have urine-soaked mats, skin irritation, and overgrown nails that make it difficult for them to walk. These dogs have not known comfort in a long time.”

Authorities have not released details about how long the dogs were kept inside the home or who was responsible for their care. The criminal investigation into Ryan’s death remains ongoing, and no confirmation has been received that the remains found on her property were her’s.
