Telecommunications giant Comcast has completed a major expansion in Madison County aimed at connecting thousands of residences and businesses to reliable, high-speed internet through its Xfinity brand.
According to a release from the company, the project was made possible through a $4.8 million grant from Madison County, a $4.9 million grant from the state of Mississippi, and a $7.6 million corporate investment by Comcast.
“This project reflects Mississippi’s commitment to expanding access to high-quality broadband in every corner of the state,” said Sally Doty, executive director of the Broadband Expansion and Accessibility of Mississippi office. “By working with partners like Xfinity and Madison County, we’re making meaningful progress toward closing service gaps and supporting the future of our communities.”
Madison County, which sits near the state capital of Jackson, boasts a population of more than 110,000 residents, per estimates. The county is one of the fastest-growing areas in Mississippi and has been selected to facilitate two sites consisting of multi-billion-dollar data centers operated by Amazon Web Services.
“Expanding reliable internet access is essential to ensuring Madison County continues to grow and thrive,” Madison County District 5 Supervisor Paul Griffin said. “Xfinity’s investment in our community will help more families, students, and businesses connect to the tools they need to succeed.”
