Cardiologists in both Oxford and Athens will be getting calls after Wednesday night’s overtime thriller between Ole Miss and No. 21 Georgia, one that found the Rebels earning a 97-95 win on the road.
Freshman Patton Pinkins grabbed a crucial offensive rebound off and connected on a buzzer-beater in the extra frame to secure the second consecutive SEC win for Chris Beard’s team. The bucket capped a back-and-forth affair that had nails being bitten down to the cuticle in Stegeman Coliseum.

Ole Miss (10-7, 2-2 SEC) shot a whopping 51% from the floor in arguably its best offensive outing of the season, with AJ Storr’s 27 points leading the way for the red and blue. Pinkins’ 18-point night, along with his clutch shot in overtime, played an integral role in the win. Georgia (14-3, 2-2 SEC), in a strong offensive showing, was led by Jeremiah Wilkinson’s 32 points.
Kanon Catchings hit the first shot of the night, giving Georgia a quick 3-0 lead, before Ole Miss countered. At the 16:32 mark, the two teams were tied 7-7, then Ole Miss proceeded to jump ahead. Storr knocked down three unanswered jumpers, and Kezza Giffa knocked down a three-pointer to lead the Rebels on a 15-3 run over a six-minute span.
The home Bulldogs rallied back, as they began to heat up from behind the arc. After connecting on seven deep shots, Georgia led 38-34 with two minutes left in the opening half, erasing all the positive momentum Ole Miss had garnered. The halftime score was 40-35 in favor of former Rebel hooper and current Bulldog frontman Mike White’s group.
Pinkins opened up a fast-paced second half with a trio of three-point baskets to keep Ole Miss in lockstep with a red-hot Georgia. The Rebels tied it up 46-46 with 17:20 on the clock. From there, a slug fest played out. The Bulldogs took a five-point lead at the 10:58 mark, one that was neutralized by a Travis Perry three-pointer and a pair of free throws by Kezza Giffa. A later triple hit by Perry followed by a Storr layup put Ole Miss on top 73-71 with 6:52 remaining in regulation.
Sparring continued, with both teams taking turns reclaiming a lead. Georgia began to pull away late, going up 87-83 with under a minute left in the second half. When Ole Miss needed a hero, Storr stepped up, delivering consecutive layups to send the game to overtime. In the final five minutes, Ole Miss found most of its scoring at the charity stripe, where the Rebels made all six shots.
With 10 seconds on the clock, Georgia’s Marcus Millender split a pair of free throws, missing an opportunity for Georgia to take a one-point lead. Ole Miss quickly got the ball up the court. A missed jumper by Storr was corraled by Pinkins, and the rest is history.

Both teams shot well from deep on Wednesday. Ole Miss made 11 of 24 shots from behind the arc, while Georgia hit 15 of 35 three-point attempts. The Bulldogs had the advantage at the charity stripe, where they were 26-34, compared to the Rebels’ 14-19. Bench scoring favored Ole Miss by 33 points, though that statistic was skewed by Storr not being in the starting rotation.
Georgia outrebounded Ole Miss 42-37, but scored 12 fewer points in the paint. While turnovers were dead even, the Rebels scored seven more points off of takeaways. Ole Miss also had four more blocks than its conference counterpart.
Next up for Ole Miss is the Egg Bowl on the hardwood. The Rebels will travel to Starkville to play Mississippi State on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The game will air on the SEC Network and participating SuperTalk Mississippi stations.
