Over a week after Winter Storm Fern passed through Mississippi, the disaster’s death toll is still climbing.
“Sadly, two more deaths have been reported – one in DeSoto County and one in Sharkey County, bringing the total to 25 statewide,” the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency announced on Monday night.
Deaths have now been confirmed in Adams, Alcorn, Benton, DeSoto, Hinds, Jefferson, Leflore, Sharkey, Tippah, Tishomingo, Union, Warren, and Yazoo counties.
51 counties have reported damage from the storm, with the latest numbers showing 369 homes, 62 public roads, 26 businesses, and 20 farms either being damaged or destroyed. Those numbers are expected to fluctuate as assessments continue, MEMA noted.

Efforts to deliver assistance and restore power are also continuing. As of Monday night, the state was working to fill requests for meals, water, cots, blankets, and generators in 41 counties. The statewide power outage number was approximately 39,800, down from a peak of 180,000-plus.
