The John Carr era of Starkville High School football has come to an end after just one season.
Carr is pursuing a new venture — one at the highest level of football, where he is joining Todd Monken’s inaugural Cleveland Browns staff. The longtime coach will be the franchise’s chief of staff.
During his one year in Starkville, Carr’s team compiled a 6-5 overall record and fell to eventual state champion runner-up Tupelo in the first round of the MHSAA 7A playoffs. No stranger to quick stops, Carr had a cup of coffee at Clinton High School, where he was the Arrows’ head coach for the season preceding the one he spent with the Yellowjackets.
Before Clinton, Carr worked as head coach at Ouachita Parish High School in Monroe, La. There, he amassed a 72-28 record across eight seasons. He has previously held assistant coaching and leadership roles at Southern Miss, Louisiana-Monroe, Troy, Jones College, and East Mississippi Community College.
Starkville, under the guidance of Athletics Director Jay Hopson, will begin its second coaching search in two years. Prior to Carr’s departure, former Yellowjacket frontman Chris Jones took the job at Hinds Community College.
