The Jackson Police Department said it responded early Sunday morning to a local apartment complex where a woman had shot and killed a teenager who was breaking into her home.
According to a news release from JPD, officers arrived at the Park at Inverness apartments in the 5800 block of Ridgewood Road around 2:30 a.m. They found one person dead from a gunshot wound and called the county coroner to the scene.
The investigation revealed that two males wearing ski masks had entered the apartment. The owner fired at one of the intruders while the other fled, the release stated.
“The owner, fearing for her life, fired a weapon, striking at least one suspect who had entered the apartment,” JPD said.
In a Sunday night update, JPD identified the deceased as 15-year-old Kaden Young. Sources said Young had been a student at Jackson Academy but did not return for the spring semester. Young’s accomplice, 18-year-old Quintavion Myles, was taken into custody and charged with burglary of an occupied dwelling and murder connected to a separate case.
Myles appeared in court Monday morning and received a $150,000 bond for the burglary of an occupied dwelling charge and was denied bond on the murder charge.
The owner was interviewed at the department’s headquarters and has since been released, with JPD calling the shooting a “justifiable” homicide.
