A 12-year-old was taken into custody following online threats made toward two schools in Clinton.

According to the Clinton Public School District, administrators at Clinton Junior High School and Sumner Hill were made aware Wednesday evening of two social media posts involving “possible threats to student safety” at both schools. An investigation was immediately launched by the district and local law enforcement.

Just after midnight Thursday, investigators with the Clinton Police Department identified a 12-year-old suspect and took them into custody. The juvenile’s identity has not been released.

“This individual will face all consequences legally allowed,” the district said in a statement. “The Clinton Public School District takes all threats seriously. The safety and security of all students, faculty, and staff is of the utmost priority.”

Additional security measures will be in place at Clinton Junior High School and Sumner Hill on Thursday. Officers from the Clinton Police Department will also be stationed on the campuses.
