The Hinds County circuit and chancery courthouses are back open as police continue to investigate “suspicious notes” left on the doors of both venues.

Sheriff Tyree Jones, who also serves as Jackson’s interim police chief, announced Thursday morning that law enforcement is assessing the scene at the courthouses, along with other buildings in the city’s downtown area. The courthouses were temporarily shut down after an unidentified male allegedly penned unspecified notes at the doors of the facilities and vandalized them with spray paint.

“An unknown male suspect left suspicious notes on the doors of both courthouses and vandalized the doors with spray paint, as well as other downtown locations,” Jones said. “Our federal partners have been notified, and Capitol Police is assisting with the investigation. Anyone with any information regarding the identity of this individual should contact police.”

Jones added there is no active threat at this time, but those who have information linked to this case are urged to call law enforcement immediately.
