An investigation is underway after a fisherman spotted a dead body floating in the Pearl River.
The Rankin County Sheriff’s Office reports that it was notified of the body around 10:09 a.m. Thursday morning. Officials say the discovery was made near the Interstate 20 bridge overlooking the river. An hour and a half after police were notified about the individual, law enforcement observed the body floating in the water near the Pearl River, just east of State Street.
Rankin County’s Emergency Operations Command has used a watercraft to search for the individual. In the meantime, Capitol Police, which has jurisdiction over that specific area, took over the investigation.
Officials noted that the body was recovered around 12:30 p.m. and has been transported to the Mississippi State Crime Lab for an autopsy.
