Mississippians are encouraged to enjoy the great outdoors this President’s Day, with recreational fees being waived at the state’s National Forests.
According to the National Forest Service, fees will not be charged at the Bienville Ranger District, Chickasawhay Ranger District, DeSoto Ranger District, Homochitto Ranger District, Holly Springs Ranger District, and the Tombigbee Ranger District on Monday. Officials say this will give the public a golden opportunity to experience the natural beauty only found outdoors.
“It’s a great time to visit a national forest. Have a picnic. Go fishing. Take a hike. Or just enjoy the outdoors. Studies show that spending time in nature can provide positive mental and physical health benefits, including reducing stress, enhancing sleep and creativity, and improving memory,” a release from the National Forest Service reads. “National forests provide many outdoor recreation opportunities that support mental, physical, cultural, spiritual, and economic benefits.”
The fee waiver does not include campgrounds, officials report. The Chewalla Lake Recreation Area within the Holly Springs Ranger District remains closed because of impacts from Winter Storm Fern.
