A subject is reported to have died by suicide after exchanging gunfire with law enforcement in Jackson over the weekend.

According to the Capitol Police Department, officers responded to a call regarding a shooting at a residence on Crestview Street on Saturday. Upon arrival at the scene, police discovered an individual lying on the street suffering from what appeared to be a gunshot wound.

While the officer was with the individual, another person, believed to be the shooter, reportedly began firing at police. The officer reportedly fired back. At that point, the shooter had retreated into the home, per officials. Another individual reportedly suffering from a gunshot wound walked out of the residence and notified police that the shooter had taken their own life.

Police later found the alleged shooter deceased in the house with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The other two shooting victims were transported to a local hospital. No officers were injured.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is assessing this incident and gathering evidence. Upon completing the investigation, agents will share their findings with the Attorney General’s Office.
