A Mississippi soldier has been identified as a victim of a double homicide on Valentine’s Day.

Hamilton native Matthew Wade, 28, was reportedly shot and killed alongside Kateryna Tovmash in North Carolina on Saturday morning. The incident occurred in Tovmash’s home, with the alleged shooter being identified as Caleb Fosnaugh. Fosnaugh, who is believed to be Tovmash’s ex-boyfriend, was taken into custody in Ohio later that day.

Wade was a member of the U.S. Army and stationed at Fort Bragg. According to a social media post by Tovmash’s brother, the female victim was a Ukrainian refugee who fled to the U.S. during her country’s ongoing conflict with Russia.

“A refugee who fled the war in Ukraine seeking safety in the United States, was murdered in her own home in North Carolina. This is a second time for the past year, when a Ukrainian woman who is a refugee and is hiding for safety in North Carolina, gets murdered by a man,” Michael Tovmash, Kateryna’s brother, said, also referencing the high-profile death of Iryna Zarutska.

Fosnaugh has not officially been charged in this case. In the meantime, Wade’s sister is calling on the public to help contribute to Tovmash’s funeral expenses. Wade’s funeral will be covered by the military. No arrangements have been announced at this time.
