Law enforcement officials are investigating after a vehicle crashed into a Natchez church.
According to a report from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to Smithland Baptist Church in reference to an automobile that had wrecked into the house of worship on Monday around 5:05 p.m. Upon arrival, deputies discovered that a blue Mercury had left State Highway 61, traveled through the church gate, and collided with the front of the building. Initial findings indicate that the driver suffered an apparent medical emergency before leaving the roadway.
Responding deputies immediately initiated life-saving measures after determining the driver had a weak pulse, officials report. Adams County Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and continued medical intervention efforts, but the driver ultimately passed away. This incident is now being investigated by police as a fatality.
Because the incident originated on a state highway, the Mississippi Highway Patrol will spearhead the assessment into the wreck. The victim’s identity has not been released to the public.
“The Adams County Sheriff’s Office extends its deepest condolences to the family during this difficult time. Any further updates regarding this investigation will be provided by the Mississippi Highway Patrol,” Sheriff Travis Patten stated.
