An elementary student in DeSoto County was detained Monday after reportedly bringing a gun onto a school bus.
DeSoto County School District Superintendent Cory Uselton made the announcement. He said the firearm was found in the possession of a student from DeSoto Central Elementary School. While on the bus, other students noticed the gun and reported it to school officials.
Authorities with the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office detained the student, whose identity has not been released, before reaching class. Law enforcement officials said the weapon was inoperable and had no ammunition in the chamber, though a loaded magazine was found in the child’s possession.
The student’s parents were contacted by school administrators regarding the presence of the firearm. No arrests have been announced at this time.
