A scammer posing as a law enforcement official is telling members of the public that they owe money for missing jury duty, a Mississippi sheriff’s office warns.

Union County Sheriff Jimmy Edwards issued a warning to his constituents about an ongoing scam in which a bad actor tells the person on the other end of the line they are wanted for skipping out on jury duty and are required to pay a bond to avoid being arrested.

The scammer, according to the sheriff, goes by the alias Jason Green and manipulates the calling number to where the receiver sees the name of a law enforcement department in the caller ID. As a result of these calls, Edwards said some people have randomly shown up at the sheriff’s office with cash.

As authorities investigate the source of these calls, the public is urged to hang up on the scammer if called. The sheriff also reminds residents that police will never demand payments over the phone.
