A couple of familiar faces now have positions in the Ole Miss football program as Pete Golding continues to round out his inaugural coaching staff.
Former Rebel safety Marcus Woodson and former All-American offensive tackle Terrence Metcalf have been added to the staff directory. Woodson, who was hired less than a month after Patrick Toney’s short-lived tenure with the program came to an end, will serve as co-defensive coordinator, while Metcalf will operate as an assistant offensive coach.
Woodson, a native of Moss Point, spent four seasons as a safety at Ole Miss from 1999-2002, where he started for two years before suffering a career-ending injury. It didn’t take long for the Mississippian to trade in his cleats for a clipboard. Woodson earned his first coaching gig in 2005 at Millsaps, where he led the defensive backs room.
From there, he held various defensive and recruiting positions at Charleston Southern, Fresno State, Memphis, Auburn, Florida State, and Arkansas. Woodson was set to be the co-defensive coordinator at Kansas State under first-year head coach Collin Klein this coming season but elected to return to his home state.
“A call from Coach Pete Golding to ‘Come Home’ was a great birthday gift,” Woodson wrote on X. “Let’s work!”
Metcalf, who once blocked for Eli Manning and is the father of star NFL wideout DK Metcalf, returns to his alma mater to help on the offensive side of the ball. The College Football Hall of Famer has had previous coaching stops at Oxford High School, along with Pearl River and Coahoma community colleges
“Keith Carter deserves credit for showing the foresight and leadership needed to elevate our football program,” Metcalf said when Golding was hired as Lane Kiffin’s replacement. “Appointing Pete Golding as head coach puts our players, staff, and the entire Ole Miss family on a path toward stability, momentum, and long-term growth.”
Other notable Ole Miss staffers set to be on the sidelines or in the box when the 2026-27 season kicks off are:
- Offensive coordinator — John David Baker
- Quarterbacks — Joe Judge
- Offensive line — John Garrison
- Running backs — Frank Wilson
- Wide receivers — L’Damian Washington
- Assistant wide receivers — Micheal Spurlock
- Co-defensive coordinator/secondary — Bryan Brown
- Defensive line — Randall Joyner
- Linebackers — Jay Shoop
- Safeties — Wes Neighbors III
- Special teams coach — Jake Schoonover
Ole Miss will enter the upcoming campaign with momentum as star quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and standout running back Kewan Lacy are returning with a revamped cast of talent on both sides of the ball. The team’s opening game is scheduled to take place against Louisville in Nashville’s Nissan Stadium on Sept. 6.
