A pair of teenagers has been locked up in connection with the January death of a Wilkinson County High School student.

Law enforcement officials announced that Kevin Slack and DeMarion McNabb, both 16, were arrested in mid-March related to the Martin Luther King Jr. Day shooting of Enaje Bates. The victim was a high school senior nearing her 18th birthday.

Both Slack and McNabb are charged with one count of murder and two counts of aggravated assault. Another arrest was made in the case at an earlier date. Police took JaMonta Franklin, who was 17 at the time of his arrest, into custody. He faces the same charges as the other suspects.

Authorities said Bates was shot while sitting in a vehicle traveling along Highway 34 in Centreville on Jan. 19. Two others were in the car at the time but did not sustain any injuries. The female victim was transported to an area hospital, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is assisting Wilkinson County officials in assessing the fatal shooting.
