The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of one of its own.
Officials announced early Thursday morning that Deputy Michael Jimerson was killed in the line of duty while responding to a disturbance call late Wednesday night.
According to the sheriff’s office, Jimerson arrived at the Reserve Apartments in St. Martin at approximately 11 p.m., where an exchange of gunfire occurred between him and a female subject.
The female subject was struck and pronounced dead at the scene. Jimerson was also struck and transported to Ocean Springs Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
“Deputy Jimerson was a valued member of our law enforcement family and a trusted friend to many,” Sheriff John Ledbetter said. “His loss is deeply felt across the department and the community he served. We extend our heartfelt condolences and prayers to his family, friends, and the men and women of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department.”
Jimerson joined the sheriff’s office in 2010 as a reserve deputy before being hired full-time in 2014. He was assigned to the Patrol Division, where “he earned the respect of his colleagues and the community through professionalism, dedication, and compassion,” Ledbetter said.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case and will turn its findings over to the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office. The name of the female subject will be released after next of kin has been notified.
No other deputies sustained serious injuries during the incident.
