Four people were injured and two suspects are in custody following a Monday shooting at a Sonic restaurant in Monticello.

Monticello Police Chief Sterling Allen said he received a call just before 11 a.m. reporting an active shooter at the drive-in. As he left the police department, he could already hear gunfire.

“…I heard what no law enforcement officer ever wants to hear – gunfire,” Allen said in a statement released early Tuesday morning.

Officers with the Monticello Police Department, along with deputies from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, arrived within minutes to secure the scene and provide aid to the victims.

Four individuals were struck by gunfire during the incident. Their conditions have not been released, but Allen asked the public to keep the victims in their thoughts and prayers as they recover.

Allen also said multiple nearby businesses were hit by the gunfire.

Two arrests have been made, although the suspects’ identities have not been released, and additional arrests are expected as the investigation continues.

A number of local and state agencies responded to the scene, including fire and emergency medical services, as well as state and federal partners.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information or who witnessed the incident is encouraged to contact the Monticello Police Department at (601) 587-7732.
