Flags will fly half-staff in Mississippi on Friday in honor of slain Jackson County deputy Michael Jimerson.

Gov. Tate Reeves announced Wednesday that the state would use Friday’s flag demonstration to commemorate Jimerson’s life and law enforcement service. Jimerson was shot and killed in the line of duty on April 1.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation reported that Jimerson, 61, exchanged gunfire with a female subject later identified as Maley Elizabeth Ross, 27, at the Reserve Apartments in St. Martin following a brief foot pursuit. Ross died at the scene while Jimerson was transported to a local hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

“Deputy Jimerson, like all of our men and women of law enforcement, represents the very best of Mississippi. Mississippi stands with them as we honor and mourn this hero who has been taken from us too soon,” Reeves wrote. “In his honor, flags will be flown at half-staff on Friday, April 10.”

Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter referred to Jimerson as a “trusted friend to many,” whose loss is deeply felt across the department and the broader community. The slain deputy joined the sheriff’s office in 2010 as a reserve deputy before being hired full-time in 2014. He was assigned to the JCSO Patrol Division.
