The road to Omaha continues for both Mississippi State and Ole Miss. After rolling through the first round of NCAA Tournament action unblemished, both the Bulldogs and Rebels have advanced to super regionals.

Starting off with Mississippi State (43-17), first-year head coach Brian O’Connor gave Bulldog fans exactly what they paid to see during the first Starkville Regional in five years, with his club outscoring its opponents 39-11 in the three wins. Mississippi State took down Lipscomb, Cincinnati, and Louisiana to advance.

The Bulldogs now have a tall task ahead, one that awaits in Athens. Mississippi State is set to take on an SEC champion Georgia club that has had its number this year. Wes Johnson’s Bulldogs swept Mississippi State in Starkville in the regular season, then defeated the maroon and white in the conference tournament two weeks ago.

But if there’s a perfect time for revenge, its in a postseason series with the winner advancing to Omaha, especially with Georgia lacking star third baseman Tre Phelps to begin the weekend. Phelps was ejected during Georgia’s Athens Regional final versus Liberty for allegedly taunting the Flames’ dugout after hitting a home run in the bottom of the sixth inning during the 6-1 win. His suspension carries over into game one of the super regional.

The Athens Super Regional will begin on Saturday at 10 a.m. CT with Sunday’s game scheduled for 11 a.m. CT. Both matchups will air on ESPN and participating SuperTalk Mississippi stations. The if-necessary Monday game has not been assigned a time slot.

Ole Miss (39-21) will also face an SEC foe in its home venue this weekend. After navigating a roundabout path to sweep through the Lincoln Regional, Mike Bianco’s club will now head one state over to compete in the Auburn Super Regional.

The Rebels will have to defeat a strong Tiger club that escaped its home regional victoriously, despite a scare from four-seed Milwaukee. Ole Miss will enter the weekend battle-tested following a weekend highlighted by two extra-inning thrillers versus Arizona State and a win over Nebraska that had to be concluded a day after the game began due to inclement weather.

The Auburn Super Regional will get underway on Friday at 7 p.m. CT and Saturday at 4 p.m. CT with the if-necessary game three set to occur on Sunday at a time yet to be determined. Friday’s matchup will air on ESPN2 and Saturday’s will be televised on ESPN. Both will be broadcast on participating SuperTalk Mississippi stations.

The path to Omaha is interesting for both Mississippi State and Ole Miss. The last time both clubs advanced to the super regional round, they ended up going the distance. The Bulldogs took home the national title in 2021, while the Rebels accomplished the same feat in 2022.

If both Mississippi clubs reach the College World Series this year, there is a realistic chance that they could square off in the championship round, being on opposite sides of the tournament bracket. In the event that it plays out that way, Mississippi State would have the advantage with a 4-0 record against Ole Miss this season.
