A wet start to the week across much of Mississippi will only get wetter with significant rainfall expected through at least Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
NWS has issued a flash flood threat through Tuesday night for more than half of the state, meaning flash flooding is possible and could create dangerous travel conditions.
The Jackson metro area, Yazoo City, Vicksburg, Natchez, Brookhaven, McComb, and surrounding communities are under an Elevated Risk (Level 2 of 5). NWS says 3 to 5 inches of rain are likely to fall in a short amount of time.
Meanwhile, portions of the central Delta and areas stretching southeast and down to the Coast are under a Limited Risk (Level 1). Communities in and around Cleveland, Greenville, Greenwood, Eupora, Columbus, Kosciusko, Philadelphia, Meridian, Laurel, Hattiesburg, Poplarville, and Gulfport could see 1 to 2 inches of rain in a short period of time.
NWS urges residents in affected areas to never drive through flooded roadways, seek higher ground if a flash flood warning is issued, and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, including radio, television, and cell phone notifications.
Looking ahead, extended forecasts indicate rain chances will persist across all 82 counties through at least Sunday.
