SuperTalk Mississippi News received multiple honors, including for community impact, at the annual Mississippi Press Association journalism awards.
The newsroom won the Community Service Award in the all multi-day class after helping raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for Palmer Home for Children in 2025, among other community service efforts. It also placed third in the “Best Use of Social Media” category.
Individual honors came in the categories of “Sports News Story,” “Sports Feature,” “Game Story,” “Commentary Column,” “Sports Action Photograph,” and “Headline.”
“I’m just so proud of this team,” SuperTalk Mississippi News Director J.T. Mitchell said. “Of course, the individual honors are great – and well-deserved – but the two newsroom-wide awards reflect how our journalists work in lockstep every day to fulfill our mission, which is providing accurate coverage while supporting the statewide community that supports us.”
Articles that placed in the competition were O’Connor aiming for sustained success as new Mississippi State skipper (Ben Milam); Saltillo High School punctuates archery dominance with bullseye in national championship (Mitchell); Ole Miss undeterred by outside noise, defeats Mississippi State 38-19 in Egg Bowl (Caleb Salers); Now is the time to form Coastal Mississippi Economic Development Alliance (Ricky Mathews); and Lane Train wreck: Kiffin era ends at Ole Miss, Golding promoted as head coach (Salers).
Blake Harrell’s photo of Mississippi State wide receiver Anthony Evans III hurdling a Tennessee defender during the teams’ Sept. 27, 2025, matchup earned first place in the “Sports Action Photograph” category. The judges commented, “An amazing shot of an amazing play.”
The awards ceremony was held at the Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino in Biloxi on Saturday during the Mississippi Press Association’s 160th annual meeting. The three-day convention featured sessions, roundtables, a silent auction, and other events.
“It was a great weekend, considering it is the honor of my professional life to represent SuperTalk Mississippi News and be recognized alongside this wonderful team,” SuperTalk Mississippi News multimedia journalist Caleb Salers said. “It truly takes a collective effort to deliver statewide news to the people of Mississippi, and I’m beyond grateful to have a voice in sharing the stories most relevant to our readers and listeners.”
SuperTalk Mississippi News competes in a group that includes The Clarion-Ledger, Mississippi Today, Sun Herald, and the Daily Journal. This year’s Mississippi Press Association editorial contest was judged by volunteers from other press associations nationwide.
