A suspect shot by Biloxi police officers following a multi-agency chase has died from his injuries.
Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer confirmed to several outlets that Malcolm Matthews, 39, of Biloxi, died July 3 at the University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile. Switzer said Matthews suffered multiple gunshot wounds, and his body was sent to the Mississippi Forensics Laboratory for an autopsy.
Just before noon on July 1, officers with the Gulfport Police Department began pursuing a U-Haul van traveling at a high rate of speed after the driver allegedly fired shots at a GPD substation. Gulfport officers later terminated the pursuit before the Biloxi Police Department located the van and attempted a traffic stop.
The chase ended at the West Biloxi Boat Launch near Treasure Bay Casino and Hotel. According to the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, Matthews then fired a weapon at officers, prompting them to return fire. Matthews was struck and transported to a hospital with serious injuries.
No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation. Once complete, its findings will be turned over to the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office for review.
