Lafayette County driver rescued from overturned, submerged vehicle

Lafayette County firefighters rescued a driver in a submerged car from a ditch on Saturday.

According to the Lafayette County Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched to a single-vehicle accident on County Road 421 near Oxford. Upon arrival, they spotted the vehicle upside-down in a ditch. The mostly submerged car still had the driver trapped inside.

Firefighters entered the water alongside the Lafayette County Emergency Management Agency and Baptist Ambulance Service. The joint effort led to the rescue of the driver, who was freed from his vehicle.

“Every second counts when a vehicle is in the water, and our firefighters executed exactly the way we train,” LCFD Chief Wes Anderson said in a statement. “The crews on that scene stayed calm, worked the problem, and got that driver out. That outcome is a direct result of the hours these men and women put in on the training ground, and I could not be prouder of them.”

Shortly after the rescue, the driver was transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Saturday’s rescue marks the LCFD’s 203rd call this month and 2,060th so far in 2026.

“None of this happens without the support of our Board of Supervisors and the citizens of Lafayette County,” Anderson said. “They have made sure we have the training, the equipment, and the tools to respond to whatever we are called to: a structure fire, a wreck on a county road, or a rescue in the water. We do not take that support for granted.”
