A man has passed away from a heat-related illness, Leflore County coroner Debra Sanders announced Thursday.

The unidentified 49-year-old male is reported to have died at Greenwood Leflore Hospital. Though details surrounding the man’s passing remain slim, officials say his death is the first of its kind in the county this year.

A second heat-related death was announced in the Mississippi Delta county on Friday. Sanders confirmed that the victim was a 45-year-old man but also did not release his name.

In the meantime, healthcare officials in Mississippi urge the public to take extra precautions as the state continues to endure brutal heat conditions. Mississippians are encouraged to stay hydrated with water and electrolyte-rich beverages being the go-to, rather than alcoholic and caffeinated drinks.

Mississippians are also urged to remain indoors as much as possible and to refrain from excessive outdoor exposure when possible.
