Mississippi Attorney General has entered a crowding field of Republicans looking to be the state’s next governor.
Fitch first announced her candidacy during a Tuesday interview on Mornings with Richard Cross. She joins Mississippi Agriculture Commissioner Andy Gipson and former Speaker of the House Philip Gunn in looking to be Gov. Tate Reeves’ successor.
Fitch was elected attorney general in 2019, then reelected in 2023. Before that, she served two terms as state treasurer. In her current role, Fitch has prided herself on efforts to combat drug and human trafficking, online child exploitation, and overdose deaths, among other initiatives.

“I am proud to announce my candidacy to be the next governor of the state of Mississippi,” Fitch said. “I have been able to serve and garner the trust of the state of Mississippi for all Mississippians for a number of years through my time as treasurer and as attorney general. I’d like to continue to give back. I’d like to continue to serve the people of Mississippi.”
She also prides herself on being an influential figure in overturning Roe v. Wade, a landmark Supreme Court ruling that granted abortion access to pregnant women. That ruling was superseded by the 2022 Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision by the high court that determined abortion rights were not granted by the Constitution. Fitch’s team led the legal challenge in that case.
If elected governor, Fitch said her priorities would be continuing the recent economic development successes Mississippi has had of late, expediting the process of eliminating the state income tax, investing in small businesses, backing law enforcement in initiatives to make local communities safer, and building upon momentum in education.
“We’ve turned a corner. We’ve had great conservative leadership under Governors [Haley Barbour], [Phil Bryant], and Reeves. The nation is watching Mississippi. I think this is the moment where we need a very serious, mature governor to stand up and lead,” Fitch said. “This is about serious governing, strategic planning, and taking Mississippi to the national spotlight of conservative governance.”
The 2027 gubernatorial primary will occur on Aug. 3, with the election taking place on Nov. 2. Other notable names circulating as possible GOP candidates are Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann, State Auditor Shad White, and business tycoon Tommy Duff.
