Cheese packaging and transportation company Marathon Cheese is expanding its Booneville operations to create 39 new jobs.

The company is investing $326,000 in northeast Mississippi and will expand its existing factory in the region to increase manufacturing capability, including a production line to increase cheese slicing and packaging capacity. The Mississippi Development Authority said the new equipment was installed at the end of July.

“Mississippi’s strongest economic development stories are often the ones that continue to be written over decades, and Marathon Cheese is a prime example,” Gov. Tate Reeves said.

“Since 1962, the company has been an important employer in Prentiss County, creating jobs and strengthening the local tax base. By reinvesting in its operations, Marathon Cheese is positioning itself for continued success in the decades ahead. We are proud to support projects that help Mississippi’s longtime employers modernize and remain competitive.”

Marathon Cheese, headquartered in Marathon, Wisc., originally opened its Booneville location in 1962. The factory currently employs 192 full-time workers, which will soon be above 200.

“Marathon Cheese has been an important part of Booneville and Prentiss County for generations.  The Board of Supervisors is proud to see the company continue investing in its future here,” Prentiss County Board of Supervisors President Richard Tollison said.

“This expansion represents $326,000 in new investment and 39 new jobs for our citizens, strengthening our local economy and creating opportunities for families throughout our county. Prentiss County’s workforce is second to none, and we appreciate Marathon Cheese’s continued confidence in Prentiss County as a place to do business.”

As is the case with most major economic development projects in the state, the Mississippi Development Authority is providing financial assistance through the Mississippi Flexible Tax Incentive program. The city of Boonville, Prentis County, and the Tennessee Valley Authority are also assisting with the project.
