Humphreys County High School football player killed in shooting

A Humphreys County High School student-athlete was shot and killed Friday night.

Law enforcement told DeltaNews.tv the shooting happened near the 300 block of Third Street in Belzoni. The deceased was identified as 16-year-old JaKamryn Price, a junior defensive end and tight end on the Cowboys football team.

Humphreys County hosted a football scrimmage earlier Friday evening.

The Belzoni Police Department and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation are investigating. No further details or potential arrests have been announced.

Humphreys County School District interim superintendent Dr. Stanley K. Ellis released the following statement Saturday morning:

“Our hearts are heavy as we extend our deepest sympathies to JaKamryn’s family, friends, classmates, teammates, teachers, coaches, and all who knew and cared for him. His presence was an important part of the Humphreys County High School family, and he will be deeply missed throughout our school community.

“During this difficult time, the Humphreys County School District will provide additional grief counseling and support services for students and staff as we come together to mourn this tremendous loss and support one another.

We ask that everyone keep JaKamryn’s family, loved ones, teammates, and the entire Humphreys County High School community in their thoughts during the days ahead.”

DeltaNews.tv reported that the Humphreys County Board of Supervisors and Humphreys County School District will hold a joint town hall meeting Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. inside the O.M. McNair Middle School gymnasium to address violence and crime in the community.
