Sumrall High School is mourning the loss of Chance Daniels, a standout football player for the Bobcats.
Daniels was identified by the Jefferson Davis County coroner as the victim of a late Sunday night shooting and car crash. According to law enforcement, the shooting happened at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Highway 42. Daniels reportedly got into a vehicle with a female after being shot, and she wrecked on the way to the hospital.
An autopsy will be performed to determine his exact cause of death.
“We are heartbroken to share the loss of one of our own, Chance Daniels. Chance was special and loved by so many. He made an impact on everyone around him, and his presence will be deeply missed,” Sumrall High School said in a Monday morning statement.
School officials also asked the community to keep Daniels’ family, friends, classmates, teammates, and teachers in their thoughts and prayers.
Daniels played wide receiver and defensive back for the Bobcats and also played on the school basketball team. He had received offers to play football at Alcorn State, Jackson State, and several in-state community colleges.
Daniels is the second Mississippi high school football player to be shot in the past month. On Aug. 21, Humphreys County junior JaKamryn Price was shot and killed in Belzoni. Three arrests have been made in connection with Price’s death.
