A DeSoto County woman has been sentenced to five years in prison and ordered to pay more than $3 million in restitution for wire fraud, the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office announced.
Katricia Smith, 47, was sentenced Tuesday after being arrested and prosecuted as part of the National Health Care Fraud Takedown, a coordinated effort between state and federal officials to stop illegal health care billing schemes.
In 2023 and 2024, Smith knowingly submitted false claims for Medicaid services that her company, KLS Medical Services, did not offer. The Olive Branch native was sentenced on one count of wire fraud.
“I am committed to rooting out waste, fraud, and corruption, and holding the scammers, fraudsters, and grifters accountable,” Fitch said. “The strong partnership between our Medicaid Fraud Control Unit and Mississippi’s Division of Medicaid keeps a close eye on your taxpayer dollars, making sure they get to the Mississippians in need that they are meant to help.”
As part of the sentence, Smith must pay restitution to the Mississippi Division of Medicaid.
Smith’s case is one of 11 indictments announced by Fitch in June involving health care fraud totaling up to $12.3 million.
