A Hattiesburg man accused of directing a terrorist threat in a social media post centered around a Southern Miss football game has been arrested.
24-year-old La’Damien Hutchins was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service in Poplarville on Sept. 10 after a threat he reportedly made online that targeted the Southern Miss 2026-27 season opener against Alcorn State at Renasant Stadium on Sept. 5.
Hutchins, allegedly posting under the alias “Frank Lucas,” wrote in a Facebook post, “don’t go to usm vs alcorn one of my opps goin and im lighting that bit up fasure (SIC) … lyk (let you know) in advance.”
The post insinuated that the defendant planned to bring a gun with the intent to fire it at the sporting event.
After an investigation, Hutchins was identified as the suspect and arrested through a joint effort by four law enforcement agencies. He is being charged with terrorist threat and is currently being held at the Forrest County jail under a $10,000 bond.
“The Hattiesburg Police Department worked alongside the University Police Department, Forrest County Sheriff’s Office, and U.S. Marshals Service to quickly assess the threat, identify the individual involved, and continue the investigation,” a statement from the department reads. “At no point was there an active threat to campus or the surrounding community.”
