A Jackson man who was involved in a 12-hour standoff on Tuesday has been charged with a murder that occurred over the weekend.
According to the Jackson Police Department, officers responded to a gas station on Medgar Evers Boulevard for an aggravated assault call around 7:20 p.m. on Sept. 26. Upon arrival, they discovered the body of a Black female, who was later identified as 41-year-old Keneesha Washington. Washington had been shot and eventually succumbed to her injuries. The suspect reportedly left the scene in a grey Honda Accord at the time of the shooting.
On Monday, at approximately 6:45 p.m., robbery-homicide detectives with the JPD were following up on tips from the previous weekend’s shootings. When they were in the area of Dianne Drive, investigators spotted a vehicle that matched the description of the one fleeing the shooting parked at a residence.
The driver of the vehicle spotted the detectives and subsequently ran into the house of his estranged wife, who was not home, and barricaded himself and three of his children inside. Christopher Walker, 44, refused to come out of the house for 12 hours, ensuing a lengthy standoff.
During communications between Walker, JPD hostage negotiators, and the SWAT team, two of the children were released within the first five hours. However, Walker refused to release the last child, his son.
Around 7 a.m. on Tuesday, the SWAT team made entry into the house and was able to rescue the 14-year-old and take Walker into custody after he attempted to escape. While in possession of a firearm, he jumped out of a window and fled on foot before being tased.
Following his arrest Tuesday morning, Walker was then charged on Wednesday with the murder of Washington. In addition to murder, he is also facing auto theft and convicted felon in possession of a firearm charges.
