Millsaps avenged its first loss of the season, a 37-26 defeat to Hendrix last week, with a major thumping of Rhodes on Saturday afternoon in Jackson.
Sophomore wide receiver Derrick Tasby Jr. totaled four touchdowns to lift Millsaps (3-1, 1-0 SAA) to a dominant 54-10 win over Rhodes (0-4, 0-2). It was the latest rough showing for the Lynx, who have now been outscored 188-30 this season.
The Majors controlled the game from the start, outgaining Rhodes 545-294 and holding a 248-25 advantage on the ground.
Tasby caught four passes for 108 yards, with his three receiving touchdowns tying the Millsaps single-game record. He also added a rushing touchdown. Only Kelvin Gladney (1993) and Mike Barthelemy (2013) have scored more touchdowns in a single game for Millsaps, with both players recording five rushing touchdowns.
Senior quarterback Quez Goss found Tasby for touchdown passes of 14 and 17 yards on Millsaps’ first two possessions. Both extra-point attempts were blocked, but the Majors still took a 12-0 lead.
Tasby added his third receiving touchdown early in the second quarter when freshman quarterback Carl Reed Jr. connected with him for a 33-yard score, following a 44-yard completion to Tasby on the previous play.
Reed added a 36-yard rushing touchdown later in the half, and Tasby scored on a 5-yard run to give Millsaps a 33-3 lead at halftime. Rhodes’ only points of the first half came on a 44-yard field goal.
The Majors continued to pull away after halftime.
Senior running back Tameron Patterson broke free for a 40-yard touchdown run on Millsaps’ opening drive of the second half. Reed later connected with sophomore receiver Cornelious Dates for a 25-yard touchdown, and freshman running back Kevin Rogers II capped the scoring with a 7-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Rhodes scored its only touchdown on a 47-yard pass in the fourth quarter.
Reed completed 6 of 10 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns while adding 45 yards and a score on the ground. Goss completed 6 of 8 passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns.
Patterson rushed for 119 yards and a touchdown, while Rogers added 59 yards and a score. Dates caught three passes for 90 yards and a touchdown.
Junior linebacker Cole Williams led Millsaps with seven tackles. Junior defensive lineman Myles Johnson notched five tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and two sacks.
The Majors will be back at home next Saturday, Oct. 10, to host Centre.
