October is internationally recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and in Mississippi, healthcare officials are encouraging women to get screened regularly.

According to the state health department, Mississippi has one of the lowest breast cancer screening rates in the nation for older women and one of the highest death rates. Each year, roughly 400 women die of breast cancer, and more than 2,300 new cases are diagnosed in Mississippi. The breast cancer mortality rate is around 23.8 per 100,000 residents, significantly higher than the national average of roughly 19.5 per 100,000 residents.

A woman can be diagnosed with breast cancer at any age, but some are more likely to be affected than others. Health officials say Black women are more likely than those of other ethnicities to die from the disease. Women over age 50, those whose mothers or sisters have had breast cancer, women who are childless or start their families after age 30, and those who are overweight are most at risk.

“Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a powerful reminder that early detection saves lives,” Amy Gibbons, director of the Breast and Cervical Cancer Program/Comprehensive Cancer Control Program, said. ”BCCP is committed to helping Mississippi women access the screening and care they need to protect their health and their future.”

Screenings are for women without symptoms, officials emphasize, adding that a mammogram can detect breast cancer before a lump or other symptoms develop. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urges women to report any change in breast shape — such as a lump, discharge, or skin changes — to their healthcare provider immediately instead of waiting for the next routine mammogram.

Age, family history, genetics, and certain lifestyle factors are among the risk factors. Officials say personal and family history can help you and your healthcare provider determine whether you need earlier or additional screening.
