After a stretch of summer-like heat, Mississippi is finally in line for a taste of fall.

Temperatures are expected to drop more than 20 degrees across the state after Thursday, with cooler air arriving Friday and sticking around through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

North Mississippi will feel the biggest chill. Friday afternoon highs are predicted to fall into the mid-60s with overnight lows dipping into the 40s. Highs will hover near 70 degrees Saturday and Sunday, while nighttime temperatures remain in the lower 40s.

Central Mississippi will also see a noticeable cooldown, with Friday highs in the upper 70s before temperatures settle into the lower to mid-70s for the rest of the weekend. Overnight lows will drop into the 40s.

Southern Mississippi, including the Gulf Coast, will remain warmer than the rest of the state – but not by much. Weekend highs are expected to range from the 70s to 80s, with overnight lows dropping into the 50s.

Cooler weather brings elevated fire danger

Despite the welcome break from the heat, the incoming weather could create hazardous fire conditions.

Much of Mississippi is under an elevated fire danger risk, Level 2 of 5, through Sunday. Combined with the incoming cold front, strong winds, low humidity, and dry vegetation are contributing to the threat.

“Elevated fire danger conditions are expected through Sunday due to a combination of wind, very low relative humidity, and dry fuels,” the National Weather Service said. “Conditions worsen Friday as a strong cold from moves in, bringing gusty northwest winds around 25 to 35 mph.”

Residents should follow local burn bans and use caution with any activities that could spark a fire.

Warmer temperatures return next week

The drastic cooldown will be relatively short-lived, as temperatures are expected to climb again next week. However, the forecast calls for more moderate conditions than the recent heat.

Statewide, highs are expected to reach the 80s, with overnight lows hovering in and around the 50s.
