Officials in one northeast Mississippi county have put a bounty on beavers.

The Itawamba Soil and Water Conservation District is offering the public a cash reward for beaver tails turned in to its office. The reward is $15 per beaver tail.

“Are you an Itawamba County Landowner? Do you have a problem with beavers on your property? We are offering a bounty of $15 per tail to the landowner who brings them to our office,” a social media post from the government organization said.

The prize is redeemable for a maximum of 25 tails per landowner per year.

It’s not uncommon for local governments to call on the public to help reduce beaver populations. Beavers, considered a nuisance species, are notorious for causing costly property and infrastructure damage by building dams.

In Mississippi, the wild animals are especially effective at causing crops, woodlands, and roads to flood.
