The Mississippi Department of Public Safety has released video footage of the officer-involved shooting that claimed the life of 1-year-old Kohen Wiley.

On Thursday, officials released body camera recordings from law enforcement and surveillance videos from the June 14 incident at the Senatobia Walmart, where an officer shot into a moving vehicle in which Wiley was seated as a passenger. Wiley’s family and civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who was retained to represent the family, were able to view the footage before it was distributed to the media.

Wiley was killed in the Walmart’s parking lot. Police reported that officers responded to a shoplifting call at the retailer. While conversing with store staff, law enforcement were notified that the alleged shoplifters — two women with a child — had fled and gotten into a vehicle. Authorities said the driver moved the vehicle in officers’ direction, putting them in danger, which prompted shots to be fired.

After the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation concluded its assessment and turned its findings over to Attorney General Lynn Fitch, as is standard practice in officer-involved shootings, the attorney general’s office found that officers operated within the scope of the law. The state will not bring any charges against the officers involved.

“The Office of the Attorney General announced it has completed the review of a June 14, 2026 incident in Senatobia involving one officer with the Senatobia Police Department,” a statement from Fitch’s office reads. “In this incident, the Attorney General’s Office found the use of force was justified.”

Meanwhile, Crump and Wiley’s family argued that the shooting was unjustified. The alleged shoplifters were said to have stolen diapers from the Walmart, an offense Crump said was not worthy of police’s response.

“Diapers should NEVER cost a baby his life,” Crump wrote on social media. “The shooting of 1-year-old Kohen Wiley was NOT justified, and we will not stop demanding answers. No mother should have to bury her baby over an allegation of shoplifting diapers.”

Wiley’s death sparked protests and civil unrest in Senatobia, to the point in which leadership at the local Walmart felt obligated to close the store temporarily on multiple occasions. A common sentiment among protestors was that the fatal shooting was racially motivated.
