The Northwest Mississippi Community College volleyball team has made history.

Under head coach Allison Burchyett, the Lady Rangers have gone a perfect 36-0 in the regular season. The feat marks the first time in history that the Northwest volleyball team has gone undefeated.

On top of the perfect 36-0 record and a 10-0 mark in Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) play, the Lady Rangers swept an astounding 32 of their 36 opponents in 2026 and did not allow a single match to go to a fifth set.

“Our offensive system is very balanced,” Burchyett said about her 2026 squad. “We have hitters that can hit from outside, middle, and right side, and you don’t know where the ball is going to. Whereas some systems you might always go to the outside hitter, or always go to the middle hitter, we’re very balanced in our attack, so a lot of times teams really struggle with who’s going to be hitting the ball for Northwest. Then our defense is very good at picking balls up, so we’re able to continue rallies and continue going, and a lot of times that frustrates our opponents.”

Notably, the 2026 season is only the seventh year of Northwest volleyball, which began in 2020 with coach Burchyett. 2024, however, was the first official year that Northwest joined the MACCC for volleyball. Burchyett’s squad won the conference championship during that inaugural season.

With their undefeated record on the line, the No. 16 NJCAA Division II Lady Rangers will begin their postseason run. On Wednesday, Oct. 28, the Northwest volleyball team will host the lowest tournament seed in the Region 23 quarterfinals at Howard Coliseum in Senatobia.

If the Lady Rangers can win the quarterfinals, they will continue to host the Region 23 semifinals on Oct. 31 and beyond with the championship on Nov. 1. A Region 23 tournament win would give Northwest an automatic bid into the NJCAA DII Tournament for a chance to win the national championship.
