More than half of Mississippi is under a burn ban as most of the state has gone without measurable rainfall since early October.
According to the Mississippi Forestry Commission, outdoor burning is currently prohibited in 60 of the state’s 82 counties. The restrictions include campfires, fire pits, debris burning, and field burning. Grilling is still allowed on gas or charcoal grills when done safely.
Burn ban expiration dates vary by county, but most extend well into November.
Anyone caught violating a burn ban could face a misdemeanor fine of up to $500, the Forestry Commission reminded residents.
According to the National Weather Service’s weekly outlook, rain chances are expected to increase beginning on Halloween. From Oct. 31 through Nov. 4, much of Mississippi has an above-normal chance of precipitation.
