Polls have officially closed in what could be a record year for voter turnout in Mississippi.

Civic engagement and voting rights group Mississippi Votes was up and active before the polls opened at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, helping voters across the state make sure they had everything they needed beforehand and that their vote was cast correctly. According to Mississippi Votes Executive Director Arekia Bennett-Scott, it was a historic day for voter turnout at some precincts.

“Today has felt very energetic across the state. We’ve seen record turnout in terms of what we’ve gathered from folks working the polls today, saying that this is probably the largest turnout their particular precinct has ever seen or this is a resurgence from 2018,” Bennett-Scott said.

“I’m proud to say that there [were] lines wrapped around buildings, and so the precincts are seeing an overwhelming amount of voter turnout across the state,” she continued. “That just makes us really happy, because we’ve done a lot of voter registration work and a lot of turnout work to make sure that people don’t just register – they actually turn up and vote on election day.”

While we won’t get any official turnout numbers until later, this year’s absentee count in Mississippi has nearly tripled the amount from the 2022 midterms.
